I'm Pregnant... Now what?
How Can I Tell If I'm Pregnant?
You may be pregnant if you have had sexual intercourse and have the following symptoms:
• Missed period
• Short, scant period
• Sore, tender or swollen breasts
• Nausea and/or vomiting
• Fatigue
• Frequent urge to urinate
• Mood swings
These symptoms most often don't occur until you have missed your period for about two weeks, but this varies from woman to woman. Symptoms can occur earlier for some women, sometimes just a week after a missed period.
Pregnancy tests can be obtained at any pharmacy or grocery store. You can also get one from Sexual Health (780-513-7500) or contact your doctor to confirm for sure.
I'm Pregnant, whats the next step?
Your physician has confirmed that you are pregnant. Contact our office (780-538-3854) so we can set up an appointment to tell you more about our program. Everything at our program is free and completely confidential. We even offer free transportation services.
No, you do not need your parent's permission to enrol, no referrals are required.
I'm on Birth Control, I won't get pregnant right?
Other than abstinence, no form of birth control is 100% effective. 2 forms is always best (e.g. the Pill & a condom). However, there are still chances of getting pregnant with correct use of birth control, so your best bet is to refrain from having sex.
How can I make sure my baby is healthy?
We all love to eat junk food but its important to remember that whatever you eat, your baby eats, too. To have a healthy baby, you must also eat the right foods. Contact our Babies Best Start Outreach Worker for more information on health & nutrition!
Is it okay to drink alcohol?
If you drink any kind of alcohol, it reaches your baby right away. Babies can be born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), mental and physical health problems, as well as other birth defects as a result of continued alcohol consumption. It is best not to drink during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
I'm a smoker, but I want to stop. Can you help?
We now offer our clients a great program called STARSS (Start Thinking About Reducing Second-Hand Smoke) that promotes minimizing second hand smoke and gives support for those who would like to quit smoking altogether.
This program is offered on alternating Tuesdays (opposite Breastfeeding) from 1:00 to 2:30pm.
Do you have a question that needs answering?
Feel free to ask us! We keep all discussions completely confidential for your privacy. If we can't help you, we'll point you in the direction of someone who can. Any questions you might have about pregnancy, parenting or even relationships.
